DAY 2: SIEM REAP / FULL DAY ANGKOR TOUR & SUNRISE AT ANGKOR WAT

Today rise early to catch the spectacular sunrise over the wonderful ruins of Angkor Wat, regarded by many as the quintessential Angkor experience. Enter through the eastern gate and exit at the west gate avoiding the crowds. Discover the masterpiece of the Khmer empire, walking amid moss-covered, pathways and intricately carved bas-reliefs.

After breakfast at the hotel drive to visit Banteay Srei temple “the Citadel of Women”, a pink sandstone temple with beautiful ornate stone carvings which is seen nowhere else in Angkor. Stop at a local village along the way to meet local people and see how they produce their local commodities such as sugar palm. Lunch served at a local restaurant.

Spend this afternoon discovering the ancient fortified city of Angkor Thom and its stunning Bayon Temple. The structure of the giant faces of Bayon temple is staggering in its construction and most Angkor specialists agree that it is one of the finest examples of classic Khmer architecture. Continue to Baphuon temple and then see the Terrace of the Elephant and Terrace of the Leper King to view their detailed stone carvings. Lastly visit the mysterious Ta Prohm, also known the “Kingdom of the Trees” or “Tomb Raider Temple”. Climb over its crumbling stonework and marvel at the tree roots dripping down the temple’s walls and see weathered Buddha faces appear in bas-relief and giant tree roots seem to flow over stone walls.

This evening enjoy your welcome delicious dinner with Traditional Khmer Dance performance at a local restaurant.

DAY 3: SIEM REAP / FULL DAY TONLE SAP LAKE WITH A BOAT TRIP & QUAD BIKE TOUR

This morning set sail on Tonle Sap Lake, the largest fresh water lake in Southeast Asia to see the floating villages and catfish farms dotting the landscape at Kampong Phluk. Cambodia’s Tonle Sap, or Great Lake, is one of the unique geographical wonders, as it offers visitors insights into the centuries-old traditions of riparian life and the natural splendour of the country. It flows into the Tonle Sap River, joining the Mekong River in Phnom Penh which creates the most unusual characteristic of the lake, reversing the water flow as the seasons changed and doubling the lakes size between July and October.

Afterwards experience a hosted home lunch by a local family in the nearby village. Take some rest after lunch and talk with the family about their life before visiting Roluos Group of Temples, the site of an ancient center of Khmer civilization known as Hariharalaya and as such the oldest temple complex of this area, dating back to the 8th and 9th century. Or touring the craft centre at Artisan d’Angkor, an organization dedicated to reviving the ancient Khmer arts of silk making, stone and wood carving, lacquering and painting.

Later go on with an adventurous quad biking tour “Sunset on the paddy fields” through rural area of Siem Reap and end with a beautiful view of the setting sun as it dips below the rice fields. Starting at 5.15 pm, this tour takes about 1hour or more and led by a guide from the quad company. Dinner is served at a local restaurant.

DAY 3: SIEM REAP / FULL DAY KULEN MOUNTAIN & BENG MEALEA TEMPLE

It’s definitely worth making the journey that little bit further to avoid the crowds and experience the local authenticity. Head to discover the holy Kulen Mountain, widely regarded as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire, and from here that King Jayavarman II proclaimed independence from Java in 802 A.D. It’s a sacred place for the Khmer who come in droves on the weekends. Similar but much bigger than Kbal Spean, the site is known for its carvings representing fertility and its waters hold special significance to the people of Cambodia. Just a few inches under the surface of the water, over 1000 carvings of Yoni and Linga are etched into the sandstone riverbed. The river then ends with a beautiful waterfall, where you can take a refreshing bath. Take this chance to taste some fruits and local produce as your guide will facilitate interaction with the villagers.

After a picnic lunch at Kulen Mountain, descending to visit the jungle temple of Beng Mealea. Undiscovered for centuries, Beng Mealea is one of the very few temples that actually give the opportunity to climb through it, giving a very ‘Indiana Jones’ feel to the experience.

This evening your farewell dinner will be served at Pharé Café & restaurant and followed by the lively “Cambodian Circus Show” by Phare’s artists (normal seat B).
